The produce isle contains the healthiest products in the market, which are loaded with nutrients. One item that is essential and excellent for cooking and snacking is the Cucumber. Cucumbers or Pepinillos are in the watermelon family along with squash and zucchini. Loaded with vitamins and minerals, the cucumber is delicious, beneficial, and medicinal. The cucumber has many advantages and uses for healthy benefits inside and out. They have a light, crisp, and refreshing flavor.

Cucumbers have been around for thousands of years and they originated from India. There are numerous varieties to choose from with all kinds of different textures, shapes, colors, and flavor. They also vary in seed content. Some of the most popular kinds are the garden variety (which is the most common in North America), the English Cuke, and the Kirby, which is used mostly for pickling. The differences between the regular and the English cucumbers are that the English grows longer, has a sweeter flavor, and costs more.The seeds in the English cucumber are so small that it is considered seedless. They can be found in the market wrapped in plastic to retain moisture while the regular cucumber is waxed for the same reason. That’s why these should be peeled but the English kind does not need to be. But no matter what kind you buy, make sure they are firm and dark green.

Cucumbers are 96% water and contain fiber so they help to keep us hydrated, flush toxins, and aid in digestion. Since the body is made up of mostly water, this is one of the most beneficial fruit (although its considered a vegetable like tomatoes). The best thing is that they are available year round!

To benefit from the inside, consume them in a salad, a smoothie, or with dip.

They are great alone just drizzled with olive oil, lemon juice, and sea salt.

They are low in fat and calories so no need to worry about overdoing it.

  • Good for joint health and arthritis relief
  • Promotes nail and hair growth
  • Good for teeth and gums because they fight bacteria

On the outside:

  • It tightens and reduces puffiness on skin and under eyes
  • The skin of the cucumber can be used to soothe skin when sunburned
  • Place a slice in the roof of your mouth after meals to combat bad breath instead of a sugary mint.

So keep them stocked for a delicious way to stay hydrated and healthy!
